Elloree, South Carolina -- Block Hardy
I just returned from researching
a Southern Living story about the revitalization of downtown
Elloree, South Carolina,
and came away quite impressed with this quaint horse country town.
In less than five years, downtown Elloree has gone from having virtually no businesses to a bustling and busy block of nearly a dozen antiques-oriented shops, several excellent restaurants, a world-class museum, and more.
Highlights of my visit included: a thriving shopping scene that includes South by Southwest (southern and Southwest art); antiques shops like Burkhardt Ltd., Charmingly Southern Antiques, and many more; the fascinating Elloree Heritage Museum; and creative fare at Amphorns Thai Cuisine (the spicy catfish tastily blended local fare with Amphorn Abblebys native Thailand) and Sniders (named for the towns founder and featuring excellent sandwiches and specials). I stayed at The Elloree Bed and Breakfast, where Cindy and Jack Lane offer two well-appointed rooms, creative breakfasts, and stunning gardens and grounds that include a pool, cabana, and much more!
I look forward to covering Elloree for Southern Living and other publications!
