Cruise West -- The Pacific Explorer in Central America

We just flew back from our first Cruise West small ship experience and returned huge fans of the company. Known for their intimate experiences in Alaska, Cruise West now offers other opportunities in British Columbia, the Columbia and Snake Rivers, California Wine Country, Baja California, and Central America.

Our 10-day “Between Two Seas” cruise explored the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines of Panama and Costa Rica, as well as transiting the Panama Canal. The ship only has 50 cabins for 100 passengers, so the crew and guests quickly become one big ‘family’ (many of our fellow passengers had already cruised with Cruise West one or more times).

Our itinerary included stops where no large ship could possibly anchor, including part of Panama’s San Blas Islands and the historic town of Portobelo, as well as Costa Rica’s Corcovado and Manuel Antonio National Parks. Shorter options concentrate on Costa Rica (they also have some great summer ‘Family’ cruises).

Words and pictures can’t say enough about the small ship experience and we now understand what others have always said about the Cruise West’s way of doing things in Alaska and now elsewhere. It’s completely different from large ship cruising. We now have excellent story angles and picture possibilities for a wide variety of feature articles!
