AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA: THE (ORIGINAL) PLANTATION

With the proliferation of wonderful resorts throughout the Southeast, sometimes it’s hard to forget your first love. Such is the case for us with Amelia Island Plantation in the northeast corner of Florida, which we‘ve enjoyed since the 1980s. Just 40 minutes north of Jacksonville, Amelia Island offers luxury accommodations, state-of-the-art conference facilities, a treasure trove of sports and recreation options, an extensive and gourmet selection of restaurants and lounges, and a shopper’s paradise of boutiques and stores.

With 249 ocean-view hotel rooms in the Inn or a wide variety of one-, two- and three-bedroom condos in the Villas, there are plenty of places to call home. And all of them are spread out around the sprawling 1,350-acre resort, noted for its environmental consciousness--so all can enjoy the splendor of the natural setting.

Miles of uncrowded beaches compete with the world-renowned golf and tennis. Or visitors might choose kayaking, horse-back riding, deep sea, backwater or lake fishing, a Segway ride, a luxurious spa treatment, or a simple walk along the miles of hiking trails.

From breakfast at the casual Sunrise Café to lunch poolside at the Beach Club Grill or dinner Oceanside at Ocean Grill, the culinary options at Amelia Island abound. With over 10 dining options within the resort, one certainly won’t go hungry.

The shopping at The Shops at Amelia Island Plantation are world-class. Gift shops, pet boutiques, men’s and women’s clothing, a gourmet food market, and home accessories will make one wonder why you would ever need to go to a mall.

First loves die hard. Sometimes, they are simply worth revisiting.
