Breakaway from the Ordinary

Having been walking enthusiasts for most of our lives, we had always thought a walking tour would be a breakaway from the traditional. So this spring, we embarked on a nine-day walking tour of the Umbrian region of Italy by way of a Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina-based company called Breakaway Adventures.

With a route averaging 12-15 miles per day, we walked from Italian hill town to Italian hill town enjoying the lush scenery of Umbria along the way. Our itinerary included Assisi (the religious home of St. Francis), Spello (with amazing cobblestone streets adorned with flowers), Montefalco (a wine region producing some amazing reds), Todi (featuring ancient cathedrals, Roman gates, and charming piazzas), Asproli and Montecchio (typical tiny Italian farming towns), and Orvieto (home of perfectly crafted white wines and a stunning visual feast at the town's cathedral).

Breakaway Adventures (and their local contacts at Sherpa Expeditions) arranged the rest.....detailed route maps and notes, charming accommodations at local hotels and agriturismo (popular 'farm' accommodations), continental breakfast each morning, and dinners in several towns (and dinner recommendations in towns where they don't provide it), suggestions on lunches (picnics or restaurants along our route), and luggage transfers that leave the lugging to them.

Knowing that our luggage would be waiting for us at the next town (along with an accommodating inn, soft bed, hot shower, and delicious Italian food) made the daily hike a bit easier. Plus, the hillside scenery and Italian hospitality made the entire experience a breakaway from the ordinary. We can highly recommend a Breakaway Adventures trip!
