Winston-Salem -- A Spicy Destination
We always knew that
North Carolina was known for its tangy barbecue. But we didnt
know it was also known for its tangy sauce. Hot sauce, that is.
Winston-Salem is the home of Texas Pete
Hot Sauce (and lots of other Texas Pete products) and, as we learned,
home of many other zesty attractions.
There are several unique accommodations options, including a city bed & breakfast at the Henry F. Shaffner House or a stay at a renovated cotton mill at the Brookstown Inn. Both offer great locations and ambiances and creative amenities not found in the chain hotels (which Winston-Salem has plenty of too).
Dining in Winston-Salem takes center stage. Not only can you find Texas Pete on many tables in town, you can certainly find it in some of the signature dishes on many restaurant menus. From the Mambo Sauce that comes with the fried chicken sandwich at Sweet Potatoes-A Restaurant to the Texas Pete Lodge Wings at River Birch Lodge and the tangy pork cue at Starrs Restaurant in nearby Mocksville, its not hard to get a taste of tang throughout the city.
And there is plenty
to do between meals as well. Soak up a bit of early 1800s Moravian history
at the Old Salem Museum & Gardens.
Stroll along the galleries and browse in the eclectic shops of the
Downtown Arts District. Taste a sip of
vino at any number of wineries that are part of the burgeoning
Yadkin Valley Viticultural Area.
Before you know it, its time to eat again. And the search for the perfect
spicy tang continues.
