Great White wows Doral guests

A long-time Miami golf destination, the Doral Golf Resort and Spa, opened a much-anticipated new course last month. Greg Norman’s Great White Course is definitely a feather in any Sunshine State visitor’s golf hat, with Arizona-like golf in South Florida.

With 86 victories in his professional career, including 18 U.S. PGA TOUR victories, the dynamic Australian is equally successful with Greg Norman Golf Course Design, including acclaimed designs like Sugarloaf Country Club in Atlanta. With this course, Norman basically took a flat piece of land and created a desert golf oasis.

Eliminating traditional grass rough, Norman brought in more than 50,000 tons of sparkling Coquina sand for the transition areas of the course. There are also 222 pot bunkers, dramatically contrasting the desert colors of the rest of the course. They also utilized desert plants and grasses not normally employed for golf course use, including GN-1, an Australian hybrid of bermuda grass developed by Norman’s turf company.

The 694-room Doral Golf Resort and Spa five championship layouts, 148,000 square feet of spa facilities, the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center, the new Blue Lagoon water recreation feature, five restaurants, and seven retail outlets, including the new Greg Norman Signature Shop and Spa Boutique.
