Jamaica’s Montego Bay continues golf surge with another new layout

In January, another link in the alluring links life of Montego Bay on the north coast of Jamaica will be complete. That’s when The Ocean Course at Wyndham Rose Hall Resort & Country Club will reopen after a complete overhaul.

The complete story

On and off the links, Wyndham Rose Hall Resort & Country Club is a Jamaican paradise nestled between the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean.

Originally an 18th century sugar plantation, the estate has been converted into one of the most sought after vacation destinations. The recently renovated 488-room paradise offers a wide selection of recreational amenities, including: great golf (see below), a fitness center; tennis and volleyball courts; a fully-supervised Kids Retreat; a private beach, with snorkeling; windsurfing, kayaking, and sailing; and the ultimate in recreation with Sugar Mills Falls, the most magical water complex on the island. The $7 million water theme park is the first of its kind in Jamaica, with a 280-foot-long and 30-foot-high thrill slide, three terraced pools, a lazy river, and a swim-up bar.

Phase II of the resort’s $20 million renovation is underway, which means the golf course has already been completely redesigned by world-renowned architect Bob von Hagge. The Ocean Course, already known for its beautiful vistas, was being transformed by von Hagge, with more than $4 million being spent on replacing greens and tee boxes, rebuilding fairways, installing new cart paths, and improving the irrigation system. Several of the course’s holes were reconfigured for more challenging play, with additional ocean-view holes included.

The rooms and suites feature private balconies or patios, satellite television, direct-dial telephones, alarm clock radios, individual climate control, coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, and in-room safes. Dining and entertainment is widely varied, including The Ambrosia Restaurant, Luna Di Mare Caribbean Restaurant, Mangoes Cafe, and the Casino Game Room, with slot machines.

Nearby, The White Witch golf course at the luxurious new Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall is more Jamaica golf at its best. Designed by von Hagge and Rick Baril and just opened last August, the championship layout lured Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf and the Junior Golf Championships. The course’s allure includes sinuous fairways winding through Rose Hall’s deep green hills and compelling views of the Caribbean on 16 of 18 holes.

Host to and operator of The White Witch is the luxurious new Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall. The amenity-rich resort includes a white sand beach and a turquoise swimming lagoon, swimming pools, a full-service spa, tennis, elegant dining, meeting space, and much more. Add the new Ocean Course, nearby Half Moon Bay, and Tryall and it’s easy to see why Rose Hall and Montego Bay have become a major new Caribbean golf destination.
