New Public Course Open in Delaware

This year will mark the first full season for the first daily-fee championship golf course in the Rehoboth/Bethany Beach area of Delaware, which is also close to the popular Ocean City, Maryland, area and ideal for visiting golfers.

Opened late last summer for public play, the Rick Jacobson-designed layout features natural sand dunes and wetland areas throughout its 170 acres. The course plays to a par of 72, with the championship tees stretching to 6,834 yards of wild and winding fairways and expansive beach sand dunes. Jacobson’s impressive list of course designs includes Virginia’s Augustine Golf Club, consistently rated one of the top public courses in the country. Greens fees currently range from $40 to $80.

The name, Bear Trap Dunes, is a tribute to the historical roots of the land. Community members have referred to the site as Bear Trap since the 18th century, when there was a farm on the land by that name (though there haven’t been any recent bear sightings on the fairways).

The golf course will be the centerpiece of the Village at Bear Trap Dunes, a 700-home residential community. The community’s design will be that of a small American coastal town--similar to the historical towns found along the Delaware coast. Thanks to the success of this daily-fee course, an additional 9 holes of championship golf is also schedule to open next year.

This is an ideal outing for visitors to the popular resort areas of Bethany Beach, just three miles to the east, and Rehoboth Beach and Ocean City, only 15 minutes from the course.
