California’s Carmel Valley Ranch reopens classic Dye layout

One of the Monterey Peninsula’s finest courses just got better, thanks to a redesign by the original architect, Pete Dye.

Dye came back to the course, which he originally built in 1981. The renovation program added tees; removed, remodeled, and relocated bunkers and hazards to give better playing options; and changed mounds, fairways, and rough to improve visibility

The complete story

The 6,234-yard, par 70 course is as scenic as ever, but it’s become more playable to all levels. All along the layout, golfers enjoy views of the Carmel Valley Hills in the distance and the resort’s suites dotting the hillside.

The signature hole is still #11, with a 115-foot drop from the elevated tee to the fairway. The right side of the hole extends along 2,300-foot Snively’s Ridge, while the left side is bordered by a 1,200-foot bunker.

Golfers can also take advantage of the area’s most complete practice facility, the Women to the Fore and other instructional opportunities, and a full-service pro shop. The new course offers a perfect reason to visit and the resort makes a great base to stay.

Situated six miles from Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley Ranch is set on 1,700 acres, surrounded by rolling hills. With traditional California-style furnishings, the resort features 144 spacious suites that are tucked into the hillsides. Cathedral ceilings, working fireplaces, wraparound decks, bleached wood walls, and great views complete the mood.

In addition to great new golf, there a full range of amenities and services. The possibilities include restaurants where fresh local ingredients rule, 12 tennis courts, horseback riding, and a spa and fitness center.
