Jersey has a new public layout
Incorporating former farmland in New Jerseys Washington Township, Hawk Pointe offers visitors an affordable and playable public layout just 45 minutes from Newark International.
Architect Kelly Blake Moran fashioned more than 220 acres of rolling countryside into a layout that blends with the character of the land, rather than making drastic changes. The result is a user- and nature-friendly golf course.
The complete story
Located on land that can be traced to the Revolutionary War, the layout actually embodies the most progressive traits in golf facility design, including affordability, sensitivity to the environment, and suitability to players of all abilities. The par 72 course measures 6,861 yards from the championship tees.
The controlling concept was to enhance the land by altering it as little as possible and making it environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. This less-is-more design minimized disruption of existing ecosystems, deferring to the habitat of redtail hawks and other indigenous wildlife. Even the benches installed on the course are made from recycled materials.
To encourage new and less-experienced players to visit, Hawk Pointe offers special programs geared to juniors, seniors, women, and disabled golfers. A practice facility with natural teeing areas, practice bunkers, and greens for putting and chipping allows visitors to hone their game. Theres also a golf academy with computer-aided teaching.
Hawk Pointe is semi-private, with individual, family, and corporate memberships available. Greens fees are just $75 Monday through Thursday and $95 Friday through Sunday, including golf cart, complimentary use of the practice facility, and range balls. Walking is permitted after 3:00 p.m.
