Georgia’s Sea Island offers newly renovated Seaside Course

Late last year, more than 70 years after its debut, the much heralded Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club reopened after a major renovation.

Fazio at his finest

Tom Fazio, recognized as one of golf’s foremost contemporary architects, successfully combined the original Seaside nine with the former Marshside nine. Begun as a ‘gentle restoration’ project (with just surface changes), Fazio quickly changed the redesign into much more.

The final result is an overall layout that captures the original look, feel, and strategy of the original nines, but meets the demands of the modern game. The front nine plays along the Atlantic, while the back nine plays through Sea Island’s quite marshlands.

The new 18-hole Seaside Course joins the Plantation Course in the Sea Island Golf Club at The Cloister, the historic resort hotel located on Sea Island off the southern coast of Georgia. The Plantation Course underwent a similar renovation in 1998, with the Rees Jones, another designer with dozens of new and redesigned courses under his belt, combining and redesigning the original Plantation and Retreat nines.
