A college course that’s actually fun

The University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill is once again home to one of the premier college (and public) facilities in the nation.

Thanks to a complete redesign and renovation of the Finley Golf Course by Tom Fazio (a North Carolina resident), this is now a college course that’s really fun. And no matter what you score, you’ll definitely feel like you passed this course with flying colors.

The complete story

Originally built in 1949 and designed by George Cobb, UNC’s facility is now known as the New Finley Golf Course. Fazio designed a completely different layout of the course, while retaining some of the best aspects of the original.

Finley now features five sets of tees, providing a stiff challenge to the best golfers while still remaining accessible to those of all skill levels. Tees, greens, and fairways were rebuilt and planted to the highest standard, with play isolated from highway traffic and the intrusion of residential development.

The greens are huge, with the course featuring four acres of greens versus a typical average of three. Two lakes, one for each nine, were also added by Fazio.

In addition, the practice range was expanded and rebuilt, the clubhouse and snack shop received extensive renovations, and a UNC golf team facility was erected at the far end of the practice range.

The result is one of the finest college facilities in the nation, which is certain to be the host of many regional and national NCAA tournaments in the coming years. Of course, on non-event days, it’s a college course that will definitely get a passing grade from visiting duffers.
