Novel Accommodations:
Bed down in literary style at the Library Hotel

It's no mystery why New York City is the ultimate travel destination for many writers.  Its streets crackle with inspiration for stories, cultural landmarks abound, and most of the major publishing houses call it home.  But after a long day of urban eavesdropping or industry meet-and-greets, where can you go to relax and get some shut-eye?  Try the Library Hotel, an elegant, book-lined lodging that's just down the street from the New York Public Library.

Each of the hotels' guest rooms included a library of books relating to one of 60 specific themes. For instance, nonfiction writers may gravitate to the 10th floor, where room choices include Encyclopedic Works, Almanacs, Journalism and New Media. Those with a passion for literature can stay on the eighth floor in the Fiction, Classics, Fairy Tales, or Erotica rooms.

Adele Gutman, the hotel's vice president of sales and marketing, took on the enviable task of choosing and purchasing the hotel’s book collection. "It took nearly $100,000 and a ton of time", she says. "Once I purchased all of the books, we placed up to 100 of them in each room and spread the rest throughout the hotel’s public spaces.”

To bolster the reading selection further, many visiting authors donate their own books to the hotel. Recent guests have included novelists Amy Tan and David Baldacci, sex guru Dr. Ruth Westheimer, self-help author Cheryl Jarvis and fashion expert Fredric Fekkai.

But you don't have to be a famous author to enjoy the Library Hotel.  Heck you don't even have to be published. “Quite simply, this is the perfect place for anyone who loves words,” Gutman says.
