BEST NEW RESTAURANTS IN THE U.S:
ROOM FOR SOMETHING NEW

There’s always room for something new in this historic, but progressive, city.  Tristan opened in 2002 with a lively bar and hip decor, but there was obviously something missing on the food front. Jimmy Sneed’s arrival late last year solved that in a big way. Sneed, formerly of the Frog and the Redneck in Richmond, Virginia, returned to his hometown with an obvious love of local products which shows everywhere on the menu, with soups fashioned from local produce and Sneed’s famed jumbo lump crabcakes serving as prime examples. The wine list's several dozen by-the-glass choices are the best way to go with Sneed’s varied dishes.  Tristan, 55 South Market Street, Charleston, SC: 843/534-2155
