SHORESIDE SAVVY:
'SOLDIER FOR A DAY' ROLE PLAY

It seemed like one minute I was sitting on my cabin’s balcony having breakfast in my pajamas and the next I was eating lunch in a kilt, but that’s the kind of thing that can happen on a fall foliage cruise.

It all starts at Citadel National Historic Site, where you’re immediately fitted for your day as a Victorian Redcoat, including a kilt (don’t ask me if you wear something underneath). Highlights include learning to march in the 1870s style, firing a musket, attending the changing of the guard, and the firing of the noon gun. There’s also a period lunch, where I enjoyed hearty beef stew--and stares from ship passengers visiting the Citadel.
