Radisson Seven Seas....
THREE CHEERS FOR(E) BERMUDA GOLF
COURSES
Dazzling vistas and tricky winds put golfers of all skills to the test.
Bermuda
might be a small island in square miles, but it boasts more golf courses
per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Simply, Bermuda features
island golf at its best thanks to eight layouts with varying styles and a
golfer-friendly atmosphere.
From tee times to tea times, Bermuda's courses--seven of which are championship caliber--offer a new course for every day of your stay. You will be enthralled and your game will be challenged by dramatic ocean vistas, unpredictable wind, and, thanks to the island's limestone caves, undulating greens.
Here's a look at the different golf courses Bermuda has to offer.
Quite simply, Mid Ocean Club is considered one of the finest courses in the world. Designed by Charles Blair Mcdonald in 1921 and renovated by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the '50s, Mid Ocean features oceanfront Bermuda golf at it's best.
The Senior Jones also designed a gem in Port Royal Golf Course. Freeform greens overlook the sea and fairways skirt the coral cliffs at this classic course. It's one of three Bermuda Government clubs.
After undergoing its first major redesign since its opening in 1925, Belmont Golf Club reopened to rave reviews in the spring of 2003. Situated on a 110-acre estate, the tricky course is relatively short and sweet.
Designed by Devereaux Emmett back in 1922, Riddell's Bay Golf & Country Club is situated on a peninsula that's just 600 yards at its widest. This classic club offers tight fairways, narrow greens, and a perfect Bermuda golf experience.
Originally designed by Charles Banks and renovated by Roger Rulewich, Tucker's Point Golf Club has five new holes, new tee areas, re-contoured fairways, and more. With nice water views and lush scenery, it's maturing into another Bermuda classic.
Ocean View Golf Club has been a nine-hole stalwart since the '50s. Owned and maintained by the Bermuda Government, it offers pretty views of the Atlantic Ocean and rambling hills throughout the layout.
The government's other layout is the 18-hole St. George's Golf Course, which is located within walking distance of St. George's on the eastern tip of the island. It offers great Atlantic views and winds.
Th par-3 Fairmont Southampton Princess Golf Club is deceptively difficult. Thanks to Atlantic winds and ample water hazards, this scenic layout is anything but par for the course.
If you want to practice or take a few lessons before venturing onto a Bermuda course, check out Bermuda Golf Academy, which features a 320-yard driving range with 40 practice bays (25 covered). There are also eight target greens, a practice chipping bunker, an 18-hole putting green, and professional instruction. It's open day and night.
All but three clubs (Mid Ocean, Riddell's Bay, and Tucker's Point) are public. The three private clubs typically require an introduction by a member in order to play, though shore excursion staff can often help secure a tee time.
The island also hosts diverse professional and amateur tournaments. Amateur events include the Seniors Golf Tournament and Couples Golf Tournament, both held in February, and a Ladies Pro-Am Golf Classic held in March.
