Wintergreen Resort, Virginia

Commanding more than 11,000 acres along the eastern slopes of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Wintergreen has long been a favorite area of Mid-Atlantic skiers.  But these days, the greens of summer rival the whites of winter.

Youngsters head straight for the Out of Bounds Adventure Park's 25-foot climbing tower, bungee-trampoline, skate park, and BMX course. Parents might prefer the resort's 30 miles of hiking trails, mountaintop golf or a drive into the valley, where there's horseback riding at Rodes Farm Stables , boating on  Lake Monacan and more golf.

There's also mountain biking for all abilities, including lift-served for the lazy (or perhaps, the wise).  And the resort's Outdoor Wilderness Leadership School (OWLS) gives you the opportunity to explore new ground, with guided rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and ropes courses.  The emphasis on the great outdoors flows from The Wintergreen Nature Foundation, which maintains 30 miles of trails and offers guided nature hikes and programs.  More than 6,000 acres of surrounding Wintergreen landscape remains undeveloped, just waiting to be explored.--Lynn Seldon
