Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia

Combine Snowshoe's 11,000 acres of mile-high wilderness with the surrounding 800,000-acre Monongahela National Forest, and you have lots of options for summer fun.  It doesn't hurt that Intrawest has invested more than $100 million to create a year-round village that is unparalleled in the region.

Start with the skate park, with its BMX dirt track and climbing wall.  Now that the kids are happy, parents can explore their options: Choose from a gorgeous Gary Player-designed golf course, guided flyfishing on the Elk River or clayshooting.

Whole-family fun includes hiking in the woods, boating on Shaver's Lake or mountain biking on more than 125 miles of trails.

Mountain biking is big at Snowshoe.  There are now two full-service mountain biking centers, lift and shuttle service for downhill junkies, and package deals that bundle everything into one biker-friendly price.

Bikers and hikers will want to head two miles down Cheat Mountain Ridge Trail to Snowshoe’s Sunrise Backcountry Hut; modeled after Colorado's 10th Mountain Division huts.  Savvy visitors book a room for the night ($200-$250 per couple, including dinner and breakfast) at this one-of-a-kind property.  The hideaway features five cozy bedrooms, gourmet meals and storybook sunrises.  Remote and charming, there is no more romantic setting in which to celebrate summer in the Southeast.--Lynn Seldon
