New University of Washington public layout is first of two
Located
halfway between Seattle and Tacoma and just 20 minutes from Sea-Tac Airport,
the new University Course at the University of Washington provides the perfect
reason to go back to school.
The first of two planned layouts for the Washington National Golf Club, the University Course has many unusual collegiate touches that earn hit high marks.
The complete story
Designed by John Fought, who also built Trophy Lake in the Seattle area, the University Course is now home to UWs mens and womens golf teams. However, the public is more than welcome.
The University course has four notably long par fours, including a 475-yard finishing hole. Sure to become the most photographed hole, the par four 15th features a tall ridge with a cascading waterfall directly behind the green.
UW themes can be found throughout. The golf carts are gold with purple trim, in vintage UW colors. Descriptions of different Husky legends, such as Warren Moon, are outlined inside the carts.
There are also custom-colored carts for each of the other nine Pac-10 schools, as well as an impressive row of flagpoles at the entrance adorned with flags representing all teams. Out on the course, the five sets of tees are appropriately named freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and Husky.
Washington National Golf Clubs second course is set to open in 2002. The Open Course will pay tribute to the British Open, with rolling mounds and Scottish-type playing features.
