This just may be the easiest drive in golf. Lakeview Resort & Conference Center offers a great West Virginia golf getaway and it's just a 200 mile drive from Washington, D.C.

For golfers tired of crowded urban courses and crazy tee times, Lakeview is ideal for the duffer in search of golf in a relaxed resort atmosphere. Situated near Morgantown, this West Virginia golf secret is well worth the drive, even if you have a nasty hook.

The golf is certainly great at Lakeview, with 72 championship holes. The legendary Lakeview Course was built in 1957 by Pittsburgh golf architect James G. Harrison. The Mountainview Course was built in 1985.

The challenging older course, winding through the deep forests and hills of West Virginia, draws golfers from throughout the U.S. The course record of 67 is held by Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Orvil Moody. Arnold Palmer, Larry Christian, Tom Wodzian, and resident golf pro Frank Sluciak have all recorded a score of 68.

The Lakeview Course was voted by Golf Digest as one of the 100 most challenging courses in America. The par 5 7th hole features the largest vertical drop (474 feet) of any hole in the U.S. The par 5 18th is an uphill dogleg left that is considered the most difficult hole on the course. Locals say even the pros can't make the green in two.

Year-round golf package prices mean some great "drive-and-drive" values at Lakeview. In-season rates (May to October) start at just $124.50 per night double occupancy, while off-season rates drop even lower. The packages include: luxurious accommodations, play on both championship courses, breakfast and dinner daily, use of the Fitness & Sports Center, and much more.

Lakeview also has plenty of playing possibilities when you're off the links or travelling with a non-golfer. Cheat Lake provides opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, and waterskiing. The Cheat River means great whitewater rafting and the staff can help arrange a fun day with a local outfitter.

The Morgantown area also has many non-golf attractions. This college town has an active cultural scene, including the Monongalia Arts Center. Outdoors lovers should head for nearby Cooper's Rock State Forest, with an outstanding view of the 1,200-foot deep Cheat River Gorge.

Back at Lakeview, the resort's newest addition is a $2 million Fitness & Sports Center. This state-of-the-art facility features complete spa facilities, indoor and outdoor tennis, racquetball, weight-lifting equipment, a lap pool, whirlpool, and saunas. It's the perfect way to end a day on the links.

Lakeview's accommodations are perfect for the discerning duffer. The resort now has 187 guest rooms and suites, all with two double beds, cable TV, and great views. Lakeview also 79 two-bedroom condominiums that are a sound value for golf groups. The property hosts many meetings for groups of all sizes.

As with many things in West Virginia, word is spreading about the golf (and everything else) at Lakeview. To arrange a tee time and much more, contact Lakeview Resort & Conference Center at Route 6, Box 88A, Morgantown, WV 26505, 800/624-8300 or 304/594-1111.
